Design and Conditions: Custom Jewelry

Step 1: Contact and Initial Ideas

Filling out the Custom Work Request form is the first step in the process of creating a piece of custom metalwork. This gives Mara a sense of the desired timeline, price range and the scope of the project. (Projects may or may not be approved at this stage.)

Step 2: Design

After the project is approved, Mara will provide drawings/models (depending on the nature of the project) as well as the price estimates for various options. Revisions and alterations are done until an agreement is reached.

Drawing time is billed at an hourly rate of $100 and will be charged for at the time of completion of the drawings, whether or not a final piece is commissioned.

All drawings and original artwork produced during this stage are the property of The Mara Friedland Jewelry Designer. Metal smith Studio and are only for use therein.

If drawings are unnecessary, there is no design fee.

Step 3: Fabrication

A down payment of 50% of the total cost is required to begin work and is non-refundable.

If drawings are unnecessary, Mara will begin fabricating the piece straight away. Typically this happens if the client is very certain about what they want or if the client feels comfortable allowing the piece to develop organically, which often leads to the best work.

If a piece is to be cast, photos of the wax model will be emailed for approval before the model is shipped to the caster. Many adjustments can be made to the wax at this stage until the right design is reached. However, if the agreed upon design or the scope of the project is changed at this stage, it may impact original price estimates. This will be communicated before changes are made.

Any special packaging requests should be given at this stage.

Step 4: Completion

The final balance is due upon completion of the work. When a ring size is unable to be known for sure (engagement rings or other surprise gifts) one complimentary sizing is included in the cost of the piece.

The piece is guaranteed against defects for 6 months from purchase.

When it is completed, the piece will be photographed and may be used by Mara for publication, posting on social media or for MaraFriedland.com.

If the piece is to be shipped, shipping, handling and insurance charges will be added to the balance.
